Water Bridge Over River

Water Bridge Over The River : www.ritemail.blogspot.com
Even after you see it, it is still hard to believe !

Water Bridge in Germany ....

What a feat! Six years, 500 million euros, 918 meters long.......

Now this is engineering! This is a channel-bridge over the River Elbe and joins the former East and West Germany, as part of the unification project. It is located in the city of Magdeburg, near Berlin. The photo was taken on the day of inauguration. To those who appreciate engineering projects, here's a puzzle for you armchair engineers and physicists. Did that bridge have to be designed to withstand the additional weight of ship and barge traffic, or just the weight of the water?
Answer: It only needs to be designed to withstand the weight of the water! Why? A ship always displaces an amount of water that weighs the same as the ship, regardless of how heavily a ship may be loaded.

10 Amazing Things You Didn't Know About China

01. China executes three times as many people as the rest of the world

China carries out almost three times as many executions as the rest of the world put together, according to the most conservative estimate by Amnesty International. In 2008, the group confirmed 1,718 executions through news reports and public documents, but many others are not reported. Some analysts say the figure may be above 6,000. The exact number is a state secret. Many executions are done on the road using vehicles called the death vans designed by Jinguan Motors. The makers of these vans say the vehicles and injections are a civilized alternative to the firing squad, ending the life of the condemned more quickly, clinically and safely. According to them, the switch from gunshots to injections is a sign thatChina "promotes" human rights now. (Link 1 | Link 2) More ....after the break...

7.2 Earthquake Rocks Baja California

Quake
The above image is from an NOAA weather satellite and shows dust rising into the air from a powerful earthquake that hit the Baja peninsula this afternoon. Initially the quake, which struck along the California border just outside of Mexicali, Mexico, was rated a magnitude 6.9 but the intensity was quickly increased to a  7.2.
The AP reports:
"It was the largest earthquake in the region in nearly 18 years and was followed by aftershocks or distant "triggered" earthquakes on both sides of the border, said U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Lucy Jones.
A multistory parking structure collapsed at the Mexicali city hall but no one was injured, said Baja California state Civil Protection Director Alfredo Escobedo.
Other early reports indicated only minor damage, but communication in the region more than 100 miles southeast of Los Angeles is often slow."
A series of quakes followed the 7.2 shake, including a 3.0 centered off the coast of Malibu.

I wanted to write a brief, “Behind the Scenes,” segment on these remarkable African Tortoises for a while now. I was finally inspired to do so after observing a really cool site yesterday. I was walking around our large Sulcata Tortoise Habitat and noticed that two of our large mature female tortoises (Macy & Sahara) were laying eggs, at the same time, within a few feet of each other. I thought this was quite cool and ran inside to grab my digital camera (See attached Pictures of Egg Laying Sulcata Tortoises).
