Russia builds world’s largest telescope in Antarctica

The construction of the world’s largest telescope, worth $271 million, will be completed in 2011, Russian space agency Roscosmos said.
“The telescope’s size exceeds the overall height of the Empire State Building, the Sears Tower in Chicago and the Shanghai World Financial Centre,” Roscosmos said.
The IceCube telescope designed by researchers and engineers from the University of Wisconsin and sponsored by the National Science Foundation will be inserted into the ice near the South Pole.
The telescope will be looking for neutrinos from the most violent astrophysical sources, such as star explosions, gamma ray bursts, and cataclysmic phenomena involving black holes and neutron stars.
Neutrinos, the smallest known subatomic particles, travel at near the speed of light and are so tiny that they can pass through solid matter without colliding with atoms.
The telescope will be equipped with some 5,000 Digital Optical Modules buried under the ice at depths of 1.4-2.5 km. The modules will transmit experimental data for 25 years.

Workers today put the finishing touches to a 60ft-tall sculpture of a head that has been criticised for costing taxpayers £2million. The elongated woman’s face, entitled 'Dream' was erected on the site of a former slag heap alongside the M62 motorway in Merseyside.It was created by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa following orders by St Helens Borough Council to rival Gateshead's Angel of the North.

The sculpture, which will be unveiled next month, was constructed like a puzzle using 90 pieces of pre-cast concrete mixed with marble.Each piece has been painstakingly winched into place at a rate of two a day.The head, whose eyes are closed in a dream-like state, was created in response to the memories of a group of local ex-miners from the former Sutton Manor Colliery as part of Channel 4’s The Big Art Project.Situated close to Junction 7 of the M62, Dream is intended as a gateway feature for both Merseyside and Greater Manchester, as well as symbolising the regeneration of St Helens.

Suspect is alleged to have broken down

This alleged thief had to be rushed to hospital last night after being impaled on a fence.The incident took place at the East London museum.

My Gosh! I took the photo pictured above to be a nice photoshop edit. But, it’s not. It’s in actual the world’s tallest motorcycle that has already found a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The gigantic bike dubbed ‘The Monster or Dream Big’ is an upshot of creative mind of Greg Dunham from California.

The beast is 11′ 3′ tall, 20′ 4′ long and weighs a heavy 6500 pounds. Powered by a 502 cubic-inch engine (offering 500 horsepower), the Dream Big moves only when it is yoked to 2-speed transmission. And, it will enrich you with an absolutely mesmerizing ride at the terminal velocity of 65 miles per hour. The price is almost as big as the bike itself. The price tag reads $300,000.
