The world's largest Cigarette Butt
A 30-foot-tall (9-meter-tall) cigarette butt was dropped in the
middle of Trafalgar Square, London, on April this year, by the Keep
Britain Tidy campaign run by the charity ENCAMS, in protest against
cigarette butt littering. The problem has skyrocketed since July 2007,
when Britain's ban on smoking in public places was put in place.
Cigarette litter dirties 78 percent of streets in the United Kingdom.

Green Energy - The Amazing Solar Tower of Seville
Located in the Andalusian countryside of Southern Spain, near
Seville, is a giant 115 meter high concrete tower surrounded by a field
of 624 huge mirrors. These mirrors collect the sunlight and focus it at
the top of the concrete tower, where it heats water passing through
pipes, converting it into steam. This steam drives a series of turbines
that produce electricity. Simple, efficient, environment friendly and
spectacular!

CIS Solar Tower - The solar panel covered skyscraper
Green technology has always fascinated and inspired me. The solar tower of Seville, air-powered cars
and now an entire skyscraper covered with solar panels. The office
building of Co-operative Insurance (CIS), an insurance company, in
Manchester has been transformed into Europe's largest vertical array of
solar panels, designed to convert daylight into electricity.
The sides of this CIS owned skyscraper was original covered with small mosaic tiles, but after only six months, they began to fall of. They needed a solution and eventually came up with a brilliant and unique idea. After spending £5.5 million, three faces of the building was clad with a total of 7,244 solar panels generating 390kW of energy. The building also has 24 wind turbines on the roof, which provide 10% of the total power used by the building.

The Amazing Rice Paddy Art of Japan
Since 1993, the farmers of the Japanese village of Inakadate has been
creating art on rice paddy fields. By intermixing purple and
yellow-leafed rice with local green-leafed variety, imaginative farmers
in rural Japan create large scale rice paddy artworks in their fields.
Each year these farmers plant rice of different variety to create new
artworks and they last all through the growing season until the time of
harvest.
Watch how this paddy field slowly evolves into a fantastic artwork.

The underground houses of Coober Pedy
Coober Pedy is a town located in northern South Australia and is
known as the opal capital of the world, as nearly 95 percent of the
world's opal supply comes from the local mines. This small town with a
population of around 3000 has a unique way of life – nearly half of them
live underground.
Back in 1916 when people moved into Coober Pedy to mine opal, the harsh summer temperature drove them into caves dug into the hillsides. When temperatures outside raged over 40 degree centigrade, underground temperatures remained comfortable and nearly constant year-round. Even today, the town folk prefer to build their homes in underground caves. In fact, many of these homes are abandoned mine shafts dug to search opal.

Crazy Japanese Inventions
I guess the word Japanese in the title is redundant. You can’t expect any of these contraptions to come from anybody else.

Coffee cups to scare your guests
If you don’t mind your visitors spilling coffee over your carpet,
then you will surely have fun watching them scream as you serve them
coffee in the Ant-covered Cup and Saucer.
This cool table set has been created by Jin Lee, a New York based
artist, who has hand painted each ant on the cups and saucer. The set is
currently out of stock, though.

Wing Bowl 2009 – The chicken wing eating contest
The Wing Bowl is an annual chicken wing eating contest that was
founded in 1993 by two Philadelphia radio hosts, Al Morganti and Angelo
Cataldi. The Wing Bowl that began as a radio promotion has grown into an
extremely competitive and exciting tradition in Philadelphia. The Wing
Bowl is usually held on the Friday preceding the Super Bowl and every
one of the major Philadelphia television stations covers the event live.
This year the event took place on January 30.
Below are some images from Wing Bowl 2009. (Tip: forget the chickens, watch the chicks)

Cosmic Muffin, a boat that was once an airplane
As strange as it may sound, the ‘Cosmic Muffin’ is a boat made out of a rare and historic aircraft - the Boeing 307 Stratoliner dating back to 1939. The 307 was the first commercial pressurized aircraft and only ten 307s were built in the late-1930’s. Production of the aircraft was abruptly stopped when war broke out in Europe.
The Guoliang Tunnel of China
The Guoliang Tunnel is located in the Taihang Mountains, in the Hunan
Province of China. The story that led to it’s development is an
inspiring one.
Before 1972, access to the nearby Guoliang village was limited to a very difficult path carved into the mountainside. The village was nestled in a valley surrounded by towering mountains. It was basically cut off from civilization. In 1972, a group of desperate villagers decided to take matters into their own hands - they would carve a road right into the side of the mountain by themselves.

The original manuscript of Lewis Carroll-Alice in wonderland
`The original manuscript of Lewis Carroll, the pen-name of Charles
Dodgson, is one of the British Library's best - loved treasures. Dodgson
was fond of children and became friends with Lorina, Alice and Edith
Liddell, the young daughters of the Dean of his college, Christ Church.
One summer's day in 1862 he entertained them on a boat trip with a story
of Alice's adventures in a magical world entered through a rabbit-hole.
The ten-year-old Alice was so entranced that she begged him to write it
down for her. It took him some time to write out the tale - in a tiny,
neat hand - and complete the 37 illustrations. Alice finally received
the 90-page book, dedicated to 'a dear child, in memory of a summer
day', in November 1864.
Urged by friends to publish the story, Dodgson re-wrote and enlarged it, removing some of the private family references and adding two new chapters. The published version was illustrated by the artist John Tenniel.
Many years later, Alice was forced to sell her precious manuscript at auction. It was bought by an American collector, but returned to England in 1948 when a group of American benefactors presented it to the British Library in appreciation of the British people's role in the Second World War.

E3 2009 Booth Babes
No event is complete without ladies to grace the occasion. When the
Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2009 kicked off this week, one of the
biggest attractions were the offerings from big game houses like
Ubisoft, EA Games, Microsoft, Nintendo and of course, the booth babes!
Those who couldn’t make it to the live event, here are some pictures for
consolation.
