9 Best Train Journeys in the World

n a modern world where traveling between destinations is viewed as a waste of time and resources, it is hard to actually comprehend the beauty of some of the most spectacular rides on the planet. Far less comfortable, yet far more beautiful and interesting, the time spent between two destinations is equally captivating and offers many sights and sounds.
While we are very much in a century where we have ‘no time to stand and stare’, there are still some awesome train rides across the globe where the trip itself turns into a destination. So how about hopping on these 10 grand train journeys?

Glacier Express
glacier-express
Arguably the slowest ‘express’ on the planet, the 180 mile ride on this delightful route takes a good 8 hours. Not that we are complaining about the pace as this offers you loads of time to catch a glimpse of the magical panorama that lies on its path, which links the two mountain resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. 291 bridges, 91 tunnels and an altitude of 6,670 feet make this train ride similar to an expedition through fairyland.

The 10 Oldest Cities on Earth

There’s something fascinating about ancient cities that makes you want to explore everything they have to offer. If you, too, love to explore ancient civilizations or what remains of them, we have put together a list of the 10 oldest cities in the world that are still standing, reminiscent of how people lived millenniums ago.

10. Lisbon, Portugal (2000 B.C.?)

Set on seven low hills, on the north banks of the River Tagus, Lisbon’s charm is strongly linked to the past. Lisbon was first inhabited by Iberian people, responsible for building the megaliths. After centuries of growing, Lisbon is now one of the liveliest cities in Europe. The renovated palaces, magnificent churches and Art Nouveau buildings are just a few of the things that make up the city’s cultural heritage. There’s an impressive collection of ancient and modern art in many of the city’s museums such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, the National Coach Museum, and the Carmo Archaeological Museum. When you’ve seen all the cultural attractions, be sure to head down to Bairro Alto, the center of nightlife, packed with restaurants, bars and clubs. There are also plenty of shopping opportunities either for local merchandise at the Campo de Santa Clara or famous brands in the Centro Commercial Colombo.

The Grand Canyon of Verdon

The Verdon Gorge in south-eastern France has been dubbed the Grand Canyon of Verdon because of its topological similarities with the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, United States. The Grand Canyon of Verdon is about 25 kilometers long and up to 500 meters deep and measures 200 to 1500 meters from one side of the Gorge to the other. It is formed the Verdon River, which is named after its startling turquoise-green colour, one of the canyon's most distinguishing characteristics. The most impressive part lies between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, where the river has cut a ravine up to 500 metres down through the limestone mass. At the end of the canyon, the Verdon river flows into the artificial lake of Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon.

Because of its proximity to the French Riviera, the canyon is very popular with tourists, who can drive around its rim, rent kayaks or hike. The limestone walls, which are several hundreds of meters high, attract many rock climbers. It is considered an outstanding destination for multi-pitch climbing. There are routes encompassing cracks, pillars and seemingly endless walls. The climbing is generally of a technical nature, and there are over 1,500 routes, ranging from 20m to over 400m.

15 funny "The Axe Effect" ads

Axe, the brand specialized in male grooming products is well know for it's sexually laced and funny advertisements. Here are some of the best Axe ads that I could find on the net. Beware, the Axe Effect ahead.

1. This one steals the show. This mouse pad created to launch their website, AxeFantasy.com is placed under a skirt and you have to put your hand "up" the skirt in order to reach it. A pretty risky mousepad, especially since it was done in Dubai, which is a muslim country.

Incredible Leather Etching Artwork by Mark Evans

Mark Evans, from Conwy, Snowdonia, creates famous portraits by etching on leather with a hand knife.
mark-evans (8)
Mark works with large hides sourced from around the world and hand-etches them with various knives and scalpels. The process takes huge patience and an eye for detail. Using surgical precision he carves away less than a tenth of a millimetre of leather. His incisions create different tones in the leather surface as the tanned suede beneath is gradually revealed. He calls his work "micro-sculpture" and spends months perfecting each piece.

The Cardrona Bra Fence of New Zealand

The Cardrona Bra Fence of Central Otago, New Zealand, began in 1999 some time between Christmas and New Year 1999, when four women's bras were found attached to the wire fence alongside the road. It's unknown who did it and why. The news spread and soon more bras began to appear. By the end of February 2000 there were some 60 bras on the fence. At this time somebody took offence to it and removed them. The local press reported this and soon more bras began to come in.

cardrona-bra-fence
By October 2000, the number of bras had reached around 200, and again some unknown persons cleared the fence of bras. By this time, the fence had become a tourist attraction and the media gave the story of the second attack a wider coverage. This resulted in even more inflow of garments. By early 2006, the number of bras attached to the fence stood at close to 800.

The narrowest streets in the world

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the narrowest street in the world is located in Reutlingen, Germany. In reality, it's just a passageway, an exit from a rear courtyard. In the eighteenth century, this district was completely destroyed in a huge fire. To ensure that, in future, fires couldn't spread so easily from house to house, a narrow space was left between them. Measuring just 31cm in width, it quickly went into the record books as the narrowest street in the world, even though it isn't much of a street.

Talking Donkeys

This is a list recognizing the ten greatest talking donkeys from books, movies and television. At all events, the two things each entry has in common are they all talk, and they all are donkeys.

Donkey
He’s positive, sensitive, talkative, his favorite food is waffles, and he even flew for a brief moment with the help of some pixie dust. Yes, the one and only Donkey from the Shrek tetralogy hardly needs any further explanation. In 2001, Donkey, voiced by veteran Eddie Murphy, and the rest of Shrek gang announced, with a bang, the arrival of DreamWorks Animation as a power player in the computer-animated family film genre. Up until that time this extremely lucrative industry had been dominated, if not monopolized, by the Pixar studio. Yet critics and fans alike hailed Shrek for its fresh jabs at fairytale conventions, hurled openly at Pixar bedfellow Disney, and it was enough for Shrek to win the inaugural Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
