The Living Root Bridges of Cherrapunjee, India
The lower reaches of the southern slopes of Khasi and Jaintia hills,
in Northeastern India, are humid, warm and streaked by many swift
flowing rivers and mountain streams. On the slopes of this hill, among
the dense undergrowth, a species of Indian Rubber tree – (Ficus
Elastica) - thrives and flourishes. These trees shoot out many
secondary roots from their trunks. The trees, supported by these
secondary roots, can comfortably perch itself on huge boulders along
side the riverbanks or in the middle of rivers and send its roots down
to the riverbed.
The ancient War-Khasi people, a tribe in Meghalaya, had noticed these qualities of this tree and had adapted it to serve their need for building bridges across rivers and streams. In order to direct the roots in the desired direction, the Khasis sliced betel nut tree trunks half in the middle for their entire length, hollowed them out and passed the thin and long tender roots through them. The roots start growing towards other end of the stream and when they are reached they are allowed to take root in the soil. Given enough time, a sturdy, living bridge is produced.

chapters and 700 shlokas in 24 carat gold letters is available for sale
in select Ludhiana jewellery stores.
The product has been created by Pawan Sinha, an associate professor of neuroscience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Sinha had entered the Limca Book of Records in 2008 for his creation. The product had been available at Tanishq stores for the last one year; but now, it is available for sale in Ludhiana with a new brand name, Dijyo, said Rajiv Arora, CEO of Dijyo. The price of this spiritual pendant ranges from Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 and it can be worn in a gold chain or mangal sutra, Arora added. The Bhagwad Gita on pendent has been made using nanotechnology and it can be read using a microscope, said Vikas Vashisht, regional manager of Dijyo, adding that so far, more than 15,000 pieces have already been sold off in the last one year. The money raised in selling these pendants will go into the treatment of congenitally blind children whose families are too poor to afford medical help.

Transformers Robots - World Most Popular Toys set World Record
The
Transformers robots have remained one of Britain’s most popular toys
over the past 25 years despite a dramatic change in children’s
tastes, retailers have disclosed.
The chain, born in September 1985, has marked its anniversary by
releasing details of the nation's favourite toys from their top
selling gadgets and games.
According to company figures, Toys R Us has sold more than 2.5 billion
toys to 300 million customers at the chain’s 75 stores across
Britain.
But despite children’s playtime habits have changed over the past 25
years, it seems youngsters still appreciate the wars between the
Autobots and the Decepticons.
Experts said the 2007 Hollywood film, starring Megan Fox and Josh Duhamel, helped keep the toys in the bestseller range.

An acre of hemp produces more paper than an acre of trees
An acre of hemp produces more paper than an acre of trees
For
thousands of years, until 1883, hemp was the world’s largest
agricultural crop, from which the majority of fiber, fabric, soap,
lighting oil, paper, incense, and medicines were produced. In addition,
it was a primary source of essential food oil and protein for humans and
animals. Hemp seeds contain all the essential amino acids necessary
for health. The oil from hemp seeds has the highest percentage of
essential fatty acids and the lowest percentage of saturated fats.An acre of hemp produces more paper than an acre of trees. Paper made from hemp lasts for centuries, compared to 25-80 years for paper made from wood pulp. The US Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper.

World Longest Cucumber - World record set by Clare Pearce
A
grandmother in Britain grew two huge cucumbers but was in a pickle
when the largest decomposed before Guinness World Records could verify
its size.
Clare
Pearce's largest cucumber was at least 47 inches long; Frank Dimmock
of Thame, in Oxfordshire, set the current Guinness cucumber record of
just over 41 inches more than two years ago, London's Sunday Telegraph
reported.
However,
Pearce's smaller cucumber, at 42 inches, could set a new record if its
size can be verified before it decomposes, the newspaper said.
