Though
we live in an insouciant age, where shock and consternation are but the
sensibilities of a bygone era, we can’t help but feel a little, say,
distaste at some of the album covers those musical reprobates have sent
to try us. While some are so deeply inappropriate we daren’t publish
them here, others, like the above cover of the album Smile a While, by German heavy metal band, Brainstorm, leave us simply unnerved, bemused, or smiling a while.
The World Championships of Sand Sculpting was held in Washington from
September 8 to October 3. Artists from all over the world competed for
the title in three categories: solo, duet and team. The winner in solo

houses are being moved.

Rome is the capital city of Italy.
It's a cosmopolitan place, that has been a bustling metropolis for
thousands of years. Look around the city, and you'll see traces of
different periods, from the ancient Roman empire, through the Italian Renaissance, to modern times.
With
its Mediterranean climate, spring and autumn days are warm, and in the
heat of summer you can expect temperatures in the eighties. If you visit
in the winter, be sure to take warm things with you. Last time I
visited Rome in the winter, the first day found me shopping for a hat
and leather gloves!
So what to do when you're in Rome? Here are some of my favorites.

When
Eiffel Tower was inaugurated on March 31, 1889, nobody had imagined
that this elaborate structure of steel would become France's national
symbol and the most recognised icon of the modern age. The construction
was completed in a period of two years, two months and two days.
Gustave
Eiffel, a French engineer who specialised in revolutionary steel
constructions, was the architect of Eiffel Tower. Eiffel was born in
Dijon in 1832 and graduated from the Ecole Centrale des Arts et
Manufactures in 1855. He spent several years in the South West of France
supervising work on the great railway bridge in Bordeaux. In 1864, he
set up his own construction business, with metal structural work being
his speciality
.As a constructor, Eiffel has to his credit
marvellous projects such as the Porto viaduct over River Douro, the
Garabit viaduct, Pest railway station in Hungary, the dome of the Nice
Observatory, and the ingenious structure of Statue of Liberty.
Undoubtedly, it was Eiffel Tower which took his career to its peak.
During the first ten years of its existence, the number of people who have “flown” in the London Eye
has exceeded 36 million. They have gazed out at the view of London and
its surroundings and pointed out in excitement at everything they can
see – Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, Windsor Castle, the Eiffel
Tower …
What was that? The Eiffel Tower? You mean the one in Paris?
That’s what they say – on a clear day, from the top of the London Eye, you can see the Eiffel Tower!
This claim is made so often that it must be true, surely? As we all know, that many American tourists can’t possibly be wrong!
Sorry, folks, but the view isn’t quite that good! Let’s just think
about it for a minute. Paris is about 200 miles to the south of London.
If you could see that far, then you would also be able to see 200 miles
in every other direction, giving you a view of Plymouth, Bristol,
Swansea, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Hull … assuming that there were
no hills in the way!
It's the World's tallest cantilevered observation wheel, at 135
metres, making it the fourth highest construction in London. It stands
right next to the River Thames, alongside the former County Hall and
very close to the South Bank complex of theatres and art galleries.
The
first station you stop at (or, more likely, pass through) on reaching
Anglesey (Ynys Mon) when heading for Holyhead is
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. This is
certainly the longest place name in the United Kingdom, at 58 letters
(51 if the double-letter Welsh characters are taken into account), and
therefore the longest station name as well. But is there a longer name
on a station platform anywhere else in the World?

bridges around the world are built for a purpose. A bridge is somewhat
a link or a gateway linking one place to another. It may be linking
one city to another for a purpose of convenience or just making a
gateway to make other place accessible to all.
There are different
types of bridges built around the world. There beam bridges,
cantilever bridges, arch bridges, suspension bridges, cable-stayed
bridges and truss bridges. Bridges are designed mainly for pedestrian,
road traffic, trains, pipelines, waterways for barge and other.
When
we visit to another countries and places, aside from the buildings and
natural beauty of it, bridges also give this places beauty. A landmark
where everybody can remember.
Here are some of the Most Popular Bridges in the World
Tower Bridge (London, England)
The
bridge was officially opened on 30 June 1894 by The Prince of Wales and
his wife, The Princess of Wales. Tower Bridge is one of five London
bridges now owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a
charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. It is the
only one of the Trust's bridges not to connect the City of London to the
Southwark bank, the northern landfall being in Tower Hamlets.
The
Congo River (read Zaire River), in Africa, is the world’s deepest
river. The river has depths of about 250 metres. Its length is 4700 km.
This river is very similar to Amazon River in the sense that it’s the
second largest river in terms of water volume and that the river flows
through the second largest rain forest in the world. The water
catchments area of the Congo River basin lie in both north and south of
Equator making its flow very stable as there is always at least some
tributaries experiencing a rainy season at any one time.

Miniature horses are pint-size equine that are fairly new but are
quickly gaining in popularity. Ponies, on the other hand, have been
around for hundreds of years. People often get the two confused, or
think that they’re synonymous. While the two do share many
characteristics, of course, they’re entirely different types of equine.
Jessica Watson may have sailed on her own for 210 days, but the last hour of her trip was anything but solo.
As the 16-year-old Australian entered Sydney Harbor on Saturday after circumnavigating the world unassisted,
an armada surrounded her 34-foot yacht: hundreds of racing yachts, tiny
sea kayaks, dinghies, ferries, powerboats, water police vessels and one
bright red tugboat that sprayed water over everyone.
After she
wobbled onto dry land at the Sydney Opera House, Prime Minister Kevin
Rudd told her she was "Australia's newest hero." Other teenagers might
think twice before disagreeing with their country's leader on national
television. Not Jessica.
Tarsier, the world’s smallest monkey
( Only in the Philippines)
Bohol. The town where you find the famous, breath-taking chocolate hills.
It is also home to the world’s smallest primate –the tarsiers.
It
is interesting to know that an adult tarsier is only 5 inches big.
Amazing, isn’t it? They have really big eyes that can scare you, if you
see it the first time. Long brown tail to brag about.
They
are generally quiet and still most of the time, but these tarsiers can
also hop from one high bush to the other, when they are happy.
I
was told by the caretakers that a tarsier eats an average of twenty
(20) crickets a day. Wow, what an appetite huh. So you see, these street
kids from bohol would be seen running around for crickets as they would
have a day’s pay out of their catch.
I have seen a
baby tarsier…one tiny thing…only one inch in size. What a treat to have
seen this baby, who the mom sternly hides and protects from us. Its
really funny because as you see through the covered “nest” you can't
seem to see the baby, but the minute it opens its eyes, then you can
already spot it from where it is hidden. Such huge eyes.
I have learned also that a mommy tarsier produces only one (1) baby in a year…that’s why they’re rare.
They’re nice to behold and its just awesome how small they are, considering they’re monkeys.
If
you have the chance to visit the Philippines, Bohol in particular, make
sure you pass by the chocolate hills, and on your way to the Loboc
river cruise, check out the world’s smallest primate, the Tarsiers.!
The underground cities of Cappadocia
were carved out the native rock largely due to the lack of trees for building material. As a result, the subterranean settlements are multilevel with built-in ventilation shafts, about 18 stories deep, and at one time housed over 20,000 people. Most of the cities had stables for horses hollowed out of the same volcanic rock, as well as churches, water tanks, wine cellars, tombs, missionary schools, study rooms, vertical staircases, and millstone doors that could be rolled across to seal the entrance.
The earliest description of Cappadocia can be found in the Greek mercenary Xenophon's work called Anabasis. "The houses were built underground," he wrote, "the entrances were like wells, but they broadened out lower down. There were tunnels dug in the ground for the animals, while the men went down by ladder. . ." Mostly, these urban complexes served as refuge for the Hittites, who used them in defense against raiders. This enigmatic civilization, according to historians, vanished into thin air after ruling for nearly 800 years.
Living
in balance with nature can offer some challenges. Here, we try to not
kill snakes unless they are a threat to us or our livestock. Snakes are a
great help in dealing with rats and mice, and they have provided the
material for many of our homeschool lessons!
Often people kill
snakes for no real reason except ignorance and fear. This is not good
because snakes provide a valuable service to the homesteader by keeping
small rodents in check. A large black racer lives under our barn and I
have not seen a mouse there in awhile. We do try to discourage snakes
around the chicken coop because the snakes seem to love eggs as much as
we do! Snakes generally get a bit of attention here though, because
the kids like to journal the different species they have come across.
It is startling to walk into the chicken coop and come face to face
with a large rat snake though, especially since they often look very
much like a dangerous copperhead. How does one decide which is which?
This
page is supposed to be a guide to the 5 largest armies in the world,
based entirely on number of active personnel and disregarding reserves.
This is not intended to represent a list of the most powerful military
nations, a list which would either be completely subjective or simply
show the 5 Declared Nuclear Nations.
Many nations maintain a large military for purposes other than for the
protection of national interests, with many retaining the traditional of
compulsory national service in the belief that it instills discipline
and develops skills in the recruits.
1. China - 2.255m
The
People's Liberation Army (PLA) is a unified military which was
established on 1st August 1927 as the military arm of the Communist
Party of China (CCP). The PLA is not only the biggest army in the world
but also the biggest employer in the world, with an estimated 2.225m
personnel in total. Military service is compulsory for all men who reach
the age of 18, at least in theory, although this has never been
enforced due to the number of men who wish to join each year far
outstripping capacity. The Chinese military aim to only become involved
in genuine national defence and the assistance in emergency relief and
economic construction.
50,000
years ago, a small light grew brightly into a 26,000 miles per hour
flaming meteor and struck a rocky plain in the northern Arizona desert
and exploded with a force greater than 20 million tons of TNT. The
impact generated powerful shock waves that swept across the plain.
Pressures in the ground rose to over 20 million pounds per square inch
and iron and rock experienced vaporization and melting. Due to these
violent conditions, a giant bowl-shaped cavity was created, 700 feet
deep and over 4,000 feet wide. Over 175 million tons of sandstone and
limestone were ejected into the air and landed all around the crater
forming a beautiful blanket and debris.
South
Africa remained the worlds biggest producer of gold in 2006, with a
'production' of 396.3 tonnes. This is well below the countries all time
production high which is 619.5 tonnes and was achieved back in 1993.
This figure equates to 15.7% of the worlds total gold production.
2. Australia (262.9 Tonnes)
The
second largest gold producer of 2005 was Australia who produced a total
of 262.9 tonnes of gold, this is the first time that Australia jumped
the USA in gold production despite their production having peaked at
313.2 tonnes back in 1997. Australias output equates to around 10.4% of
total world output.
An
article appeared in our local paper and caught my eye. There was a
picture of Oklahoma Fresh Start, a proud Mammoth Donkey mum, with her
beautiful baby Easter Magic at the only Donkey Trail Riding Centre in
Europe which is quite near to where I live in the UK. Easter Magic is
the first Mammoth Donkey foal to be born there. At the foot of this
article, you will find a link to an online version of the story about
Easter Magic where you can see photos of her – these are copyright so I
cannot reproduce them here. I had never heard of American Mammoth
Donkeys until I read this article and wanted to find out more. Whilst I
am no expert, I wanted to share the information I have managed to find
out with you.

Lavinia
Fisher who was born in 1793 is believed to be the first American woman
serial killer. Along with her husband John operated a boarding house in Charleston South Carolina
named the " Six Mile Wayfarer House " in the early 1800's. They preyed
upon their guests killing many of them. The boarding house was located
six miles north of Charleston and that is why it was called the Six Mile
Wayfarer House.
Only known picture known to exist of Lavinia Fisher
Lavinia was a very beautiful woman and she
used her charms to help her husband to kill and rob many male travelers.
Over the years in the early 1800's many reports were filed saying that
the last time the person was seen was in Charleston South Carolina. And
the reports were many. It is believed that the Fishers killed several
hundred travelers and most were killed for money or other trade goods
they were carrying. If the Fishers saw you with a large sum of money you
did not leave the Six Mile Wayfarer House alive.
After their
arrest by the Sheriff of Charleston the Six Mile Wayfarer House was
searched and the grounds were dug up. The Sheriff said the house had
many hidden passages and the only way into the attic was by a hidden
passage. It was in the attic that the Sheriff reported finding items
that could be traced to over a hundred travelers that the Fishers had
killed. In the basement and grounds of the house over a hundred sets of
remains were found.
Dr
Harold Shipman was a British General Practitioner, who on 31st January
2000 was found guilty of 15 murders. He was given a whole life sentence
by the British Home Secretary despite the government having abolished
such terms prior to the case. After the trial a public enquiry called
the 'Shipman Enquiry' found that there was enough evidence to suggest
that Shipman had probably killed around 250 people, of whom 218 could
be identified.
Shipman remains the only British doctor to ever have been found
guilty of murdering a patient and his conviction led to an overhaul of
the legal structure for healthcare and medicine. A particular
characteristic of Shipman's crimes is that 80% of his victims were
women and that most were elderly, with his youngest victim being a 41
year old male. Harold Shipman had graduated from Leeds School of
Medicine in 1970 and started his career at Pontefract General
Infirmary, West Yorkshire. He moved on in 1974 to Todmorden, West
Yorkshire, where he took his first position as a GP. Just a year later
he was caught stealing subscription drug pethidine for his own use. He
was fined £600 and sent to a drug rehab clinic in York until clean.
Gary
Ridgeway, also known as the 'Green River Killer', killed numerous women
during the 1980s and 1990s in Washington; he strangled his victims with
rope, fishing line and sometimes any other thing he could find. He also
subjected many of his victims to forms of torture, rape and even
engaged in necrophilia. He was arrested on November 30th 2001, as he
left the factory where he worked, on suspicion of the murders of 4 women
which he had been linked to through DNA evidence.
Ridgeway pleaded guilty in November 2003 to 48 murders, all with
female victims, although he stated later that he had actually killed
more than 90 women. Almost all of his victims were prostitutes and
almost all of them had occured in the early 1980's. As part of the plea
bargain for admitting the murders he was spared the death penalty and
was instead given life in prison with no chance of parole, this means
that Ridgeway must die in prison.

the 'Shipman Enquiry' found that there was enough evidence to suggest
that Shipman had probably killed around 250 people, of whom 218 could be
identified. Shipman is not only the biggest British Serial Killer, but
is also the worlds biggest ever proven serial killer. Shipman remains the only British doctor to ever have been found

The first concerns about Shipman emerged in March 1998 when a funeral
parlour manager expressed concerns to the local coroner about the high
death rate amongst Shipmans patients. A fellow doctor took these
concerns seriously and claimed that Shipman was killing his patients,
either through negligence or intentionally, however the police were
unable to press charges through a lack of evidence (the police were
later criticised for putting inexperienced officers on the case, and
Shipman was to kill three further victims before his eventual arrest).
Thug
Behram (ca 1765 - 1840), a one time leader of the 'Thuggee Cult' in
India is said to have killed up to 931 victims by strangulation with the
ceremonial cloth used by his cult. Behram is quoted however as saying
that he was in fact 'present' at 931 murders, but only actually
committed 125 himself, and actually witnessed about a further 150 being
strangled. Behram was hanged for his murders in 1840.
The English word 'Thug' is in fact borrowed from the word 'Thuggee',
although the use of the word today differs from the true reality of the
'Thuggee'. The 'Thuggee' were covert and operated as a member of a
group, and the term typically referred to the killing of a large number
of people in a single operation. This distinguished the term from simple
armed robbery as they would target groups of travellers and kill them
in one go, before taking their possessions.
